The Little Things Holding Us Together

A warm kitchen with a steaming coffee cup, folded bath towels, a purse on the table, and laundry baskets nearby, creating a cozy feeling of coming home.

I fixed myself a cup of coffee this afternoon.

As I’m writing this, it’s still sitting beside me.

Now ice cold.

Somewhere between unloading yard sale totes, putting away Tupperware bundles, washing new bath towels, unpacking clothes, switching purses, and trying not to wake Bubba before work, I never got around to drinking it.

Funny how that happens.

I spent most of my hour drive home noticing everything that wasn’t right.

Flooded ditches.

Overflowed culverts.

A downed tree in somebody’s yard.

A poor dog tied to a tree without a dog house or even a patch of high ground.

That dog stayed on my mind for miles.

By the time I pulled into the driveway, my head was still full.

The yard sale leftovers needed unloading.

The shed needs organizing.

Mama’s Tupperware order needed sorting.

The laundry was waiting.

Life was waiting.

But somewhere between all those tasks, I started noticing something else.

The little things.

The things that quietly support us every day.

The yard sale was over.

Mama and Daddy were safe.

The flooding wasn’t where I live.

The new towels were washing.

The house was quiet.

Bubba was getting a nap before heading to work tonight.

And that cup of coffee was patiently waiting for me whenever I slowed down long enough to enjoy it.

None of those things seem particularly important on their own.

But together?

They’re comfort.

I think most of us spend our days noticing what still needs fixing.

The clutter.

The laundry.

The supper plan.

The grocery list.

The things we haven’t finished yet.

We get so focused on what’s missing that we overlook what’s already helping.

The leftovers already in the refrigerator.

The freezer meal waiting for a busy night.

The favorite coffee cup.

The container that keeps produce fresh a little longer.

The routines we’ve built without even realizing it.

The people who quietly show up.

Those little things don’t ask for recognition.

They just keep doing their job.

The older I get, the more I realize life isn’t usually held together by big dramatic moments.

It’s held together by little things.

A phone call.

A porch conversation.

Freshly washed bath towels.

A familiar routine.

A husband sleeping in the next room.

A mama who still places a Tupperware order.

A cup of coffee waiting patiently on the table.

Maybe comfort isn’t something we create.

Maybe it’s something we notice.

And maybe that’s enough.

If supper has felt like one more thing sitting on your shoulders lately, start with one small win. Like my 10-Minute Flatbread Win.

Sometimes comfort begins with knowing dinner is already halfway handled.

The coffee eventually got drank. The towels got washed. The laundry got handled.

Life has a way of moving forward one small thing at a time.

This week reminded me to notice more than what’s on my to-do list. Here are a few things worth noticing from beyond the kitchen table.
