Yesterday the fireworks filled the sky.
Families gathered around picnic tables.
The kids stayed up later than they probably should have.
Somebody laughed until sweet tea came out their nose, and somebody else probably went home with a little too much potato salad.
Then this morning…
The folding chairs started disappearing.
The flags came down.
The coolers were emptied.
The leftovers found a spot in the refrigerator.
And just like that, life quietly slipped back into its regular rhythm.
Work tomorrow.
Laundry.
Groceries.
Figuring out what’s for supper.
It happens every year.
We spend weeks looking forward to one special day, and before we know it we’re already waiting for the next one.
But somewhere along the way, I realized something.
Summer doesn’t disappear when the fireworks are over.
In fact, I think the best parts of summer usually happen after everyone goes home.
It’s porch coffee before the heat settles in.
It’s eating leftover burgers for lunch because nobody feels like cooking again.
It’s stopping by Mama’s after work just because.
It’s taking a slow ride around the lake before supper.
It’s sitting outside while Bubba tells me about his night.
It’s laughing over something that probably wouldn’t even be funny if someone else heard the story.
Those moments never make the holiday calendar.
But somehow they’re the ones I remember most.
I know life gets busy.
For many of us, summer doesn’t mean weeks off from responsibility.
It means working around vacations.
Covering shifts.
Taking care of parents.
Helping grandkids.
Trying to keep groceries in the house while everyone seems hungry all day long.
Those ordinary Tuesdays can feel… well… ordinary.
But they don’t have to be forgotten.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that memories don’t require perfect timing.
Sometimes they’re built while reheating leftovers.
Sometimes they’re built while folding towels.
Sometimes they’re built because everyone happened to be home long enough to sit together for twenty minutes.
Those little moments count.
The kitchen has taught me that better than almost anywhere else.
A meal doesn’t have to be fancy to bring people together.
A table doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated.
And your house certainly doesn’t have to look like a magazine before someone feels welcome.
Most people aren’t remembering whether the casserole dish matched the table runner.
They’re remembering how you made them feel.
They’re remembering the conversation.
The laughter.
The comfort.
The feeling that they belonged there.
As I settle back into my AutoZone routine, I’m reminded of that every single week.
Some evenings supper comes together quickly.
Some evenings leftovers save the day.
Some evenings Bubba cooks.
Some evenings I simply use what we already have.
None of those evenings are Instagram perfect.
Every one of them is real life.
And real life is where summer is happening.
Not next weekend.
Not during vacation.
Not on the next holiday.
Right now.
So if your Fourth of July decorations are packed away…
If your refrigerator is holding a few leftovers…
If tomorrow looks a whole lot like another workday…
Don’t think summer has passed you by.
It’s probably waiting for you with a cup of coffee on the porch…
A simple supper at the table…
And one more ordinary day that’s quietly becoming a memory.
Because summer isn’t waiting.
Neither should we.
